Mosaic’s mission is to create opportunities for young people – championed by Muslims and harnessing the power of positive thinking. Mosaic was founded by HRH The Prince of Wales in November 2007 to challenge the growing concern around the issues facing young Muslims living in deprived areas of Britain. To achieve this, Mosaic aims to achieve two things: increase education opportunities for those who do not have them and increase opportunities for understanding between people of different backgrounds. The Mosaic Talent Programme provides a unique programme of support for all those short-listed for the Talent Awards, which includes mentoring support from Mosaic’s inspirational supporters, internship opportunities and participation in Mosaic’s International Summit.
Over 550 guests attended the event in the presence of Guest of Honor, HRH Prince El Hassan bin Talal of Jordan. Other special guests such as Asad Ahmad, an award winning presenter and reporter for BBC London TV News; Mishal Husain, a key presenter on BBC World News; Monica Ali, a Bangladesh born Booker prize winner; David Baddiel, one of the most successful comedians of United Kingdom and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, a Dutch international goal scoring legend who was capped 24 times for his country were present at the occasion among others.
Celebrating the hard work and determination of young British Muslims, nominees were divided into 11 categories: Young Entrepreneur, Science and Technology, Arts and Culture, Community Leadership, Young Volunteer, Excellence in Education, Interfaith, International, Media, Sports and Mosaic Mentor of the Year.
The judging panel was led by Mosaic’s Chairman, HRH Princess Badiya bint El Hassan. With over a 100 nominees, there were some very tough decisions to be made as she explains; “The range and variety of candidates was most impressive and deciding on the winners turned out to be a very difficult and emotional experience”.
Korvi Rakshand was presented with the ‘International’ award, which is awarded in recognition of a young Muslim person or predominantly Muslim group of young people delivering real impacts of social benefit in those countries in which Mosaic operates.
HRH Princess Badiya personally presented the Mosaic International Award to Korvi, the Founder of JAAGO Foundation. Other awards were presented by special celebrity guests including comedian David Baddiel, star of Channel Four’s Secret Millionaire Mo Chaudry, novelist Monica Ali and BBC’s The Choir star Gareth Malone.
Korvi Rakshand has dedicated his entire life to breaking the cycle of poverty through education. This young University of London graduate left his comfortable, wealthy life to start a youth based movement, which today is called the JAAGO Foundation. The JAAGO Foundation is youth-based organization which operates a free of cost school that provides education of international standard to the impoverished children coming from the slums of Rayer Bazar and also conducts programs concerning woman empowerment; employment creation; superior health and hygiene.
The other finalists for the ‘International’ category were the Jordan River Foundation and Mr. Yılmaz Akıncı of Turkey. The Jordan River Foundation (JRF) is a non-profit non-governmental organization in Jordan chaired by Her Majesty Queen Rania Al Abdullah. JRF’s mission is to promote, in partnership with stakeholders, the development of a dynamic Jordanian society, by supporting sustainable social, economic and cultural programs that empower communities based on their needs and priorities. Yılmaz Akıncı is a journalist from Turkey, who works with Al Jazeera having worked previously for ABC News, CNN, NPR and others.
